CONTENT DESIGN & UX
Focals app
Focals need a companion app to connect to your phone. You also need to enable permissions to get the information you need on Focals.
One of the best things about working alongside a customer care team is the candid feedback from customers. I can see firsthand what tasks are confusing or what's not working so I can refine the messaging.
Check out some of the screens I worked closely on.
Adjusting Focals
When Focals started to ship to doorsteps, we needed a solution that could coach customers through adjustments. Focals rely on precise fit and positioning in order for the display to appear in your line of sight, so adjustments to the nose pads and temple ends are absolutely critical to using the product.
I started by shadowing opticians at North to see how they adjust Focals for customers. Next, I came up with an initial draft and tested these steps with users.
Through testing, I was able to simplify adjustments from a behemoth 10-pager to a simple 6-step process. I also wrote the script, made UI animations, and directed the videos for Focals adjustments and onboarding.
Password Keeper
BlackBerry 10 ushered in a new form for BlackBerry smartphones.
I wrote many how-to's and release notes for BB10, but I also wrote all of the interface text for one of the most beloved BlackBerry apps: Password Keeper.
BlackBerry customers are very savvy and make security a priority within their digital life. By working with the product managers and developers, I crafted strings that are clear and reassuring. Customers can browse confidently, knowing their passwords are stored safely.
Here's my UX writing work from a Q10 device.

Your sizing appointment
Smartglasses are a new way of computing, and Focals rely on a unique sizing process in order for you to see the holographic display.
This article outlines best practices and tips for your sizing appointment. The sizing booths in showrooms use a combination of 13 cameras and computer vision software to find a size that works for you. It's so accurate, that even stray hairs can affect your results. I worked with our product team to collect the need-to-know information and wrote the article in a way that makes this intimidating process more approachable.
It's one of our most successful articles and is featured in our appointment confirmation email.

Release notes
In early 2019, we began releasing software updates for Focals weekly.
To help customers stay informed, I spearheaded communicating the updates through release notes. It was challenging to rally everyone together—marketing, product, software, UX—but through weekly touchpoints and UX assets, I was able to keep pace with the aggressive release cadence and even animate some of the UI assets myself with InVision Studio and After Effects.
Some of my favourite releases include Spotify, Google Slides, and features for conversation detection.
